What is emotional intelligence and why does it matter?
Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to understand and manage your own emotions, as well as recognize and influence the emotions of those around you. The term was first coined in 1990 by researchers John Mayer and Peter Salovey, but was later popularized by psychologist Daniel Goleman. 71 percent of employers surveyed by CareerBuilder said they value EQ over IQ, reporting that employees with high emotional intelligence are more likely to stay calm under pressure, resolve conflict effectively, and respond to co-workers with empathy.
If you EQ is low our emotions will hijack your leadership. You will miss important clues that your body is feeling too much stress. You will overreact to situations because you can't handle your frustration and fear properly. You can even hurt your team or family members because you don't understand how stress and overwhelm make you react or even change your tone of voice.
The first step is to increase Self-awareness
A large component of emotional intelligence is self- awareness with is bigger than just knowing your strengths and weaknesses- its the ability to recognize your emotions and how they affect you. We tend to overestimate our ability to be self-aware by a long shot and that can cause enormous problems for our leadership and influence. In an assessments of more than 2 million workers, TalentSmart researchers found that “just 36 percent of people are able to accurately identify their emotions as they happen,” https://www.shrm.org/hr-today/news/hr-magazine/0318/pages/emotional-intelligence-is-key-to-outstanding-leadership.asp
You need constructive feedback to be able to look in the mirror and start identifying your emotions correctly. You can't understand others emotions before you understand your own. Leaders work harder on themselves than anyone else. And women leaders often need to learn from other women leaders who have the receipts to prove they can you the skills you need for increased emotional intelligence.
This is why we have created our own Leadership Curriculum and Coaching Experiences for Women. To fill this need of leadership training that develops women into mature, wise leaders with emotional resilience that commands respect.
